Team Formations

Team Formations FAQs

How are different grades grouped?
Tackle players are assigned to one of four divisions based on the school grade level they are entering in the fall:

  • 8th grade: Varsity
  • 7th and 8th grades: Junior Varsity
  • 5th and 6th grades
  • 3rd and 4th grades: Rookie Tackle

Please note, no player may participate in the designated divisions if they are above age as of August 1st, as set by Tualatin Valley Youth Football Association. This is carefully reviewed before team formations to ensure all players are eligible and playing at the appropriate division.

How are players assigned to teams?
The head coaches meet and select teams. TVYFL rules and OCYFA policy provide the guidelines for team formation. Among other things these guidelines dictate that when there is more than one team at any given level the teams shall be equitably and equally balanced. This means that all teams are evenly matched across talent and skill levels, with no stacked teams, no A or B teams, and no competitive or developmental teams.

How many players are on a team?
This depends on the number of players registered to play, but no more than 30. Each team in a division will have the same number of players of a given grade level. Unfortunately, this requires that a player might be moved from one team to another during pre-season due to players relocating, quitting or possible injuries. This movement of players is our most difficult task, but no team roster is officially final until league verification in early September of each season.

How are the Varsity and Junior Varsity teams handled?
The Varsity and Junior Varsity levels may include players from the seventh and eighth grades. Teams will be arranged to accommodate ability, experience, size and maturity of player. The Varsity level will be higher level of player talent, experience and size. The Junior Varsity will be a level of inclusion of seventh and eighth grade. This level is by design a level to gain experience of players of similar ability.

Ideally, our goal is to field "2" Varsity teams, however, each year is handled differently according to the number of 7th and 8th graders signed up to play football. This means that ALL 8th graders will be placed at either the Varsity or the Junior Varsity level. The Junior Varsity is NOT considered a 7th grade team. With that stated, the Varsity level (traditionally 8th graders) has become extremely competitive with the majority of youth associations choosing to field just one Varsity team.

Can I request a specific coach?
No, see above.

Can I request friends I want to be on a team with?
If your brother (or sister) is in the same division, you can request to be on the same team. Otherwise, no, see above.

How do I find out what team I will play for?
You will be notified by your coach and/or team parent coordinator after the selection process is complete. This is usually a few days after the mandatory skills assessments complete - so typically sometime at the end of that first week in August.

How are coaches selected?
Prospective volunteer coaches must complete an application and background check. A coaching committee comprised of OCYFA Board members, will then review and select Head Coaches. Assistant coaches are selected by the head coach, usually from among parents of their players who have expressed an interest in volunteering. No coaching positions are guaranteed and all coaches are subject to a background check.

How many teams are there?
This will depend on the number of players that sign up.

Do I have to try out?
No. As long as your registration is complete and paid, and you are not on a waiting list, you will be placed on a team. However, each student athlete must attend assessments during the second week of August.
